Here is another great segmented bowl built by George Tamlin, a wood turner out of La Porte, IN. You can see more of George’s projects at his website- http://georgeswoodturnings.blogspot.com
I started turning bowls about two years ago. This past fall I felt that i would like to try segmented bowls. So I bought a book on open segmenting and learned what angles you need to cut. From there it was just doing. Being self taught I started with a bigger one. It is made from Walnut, Maple and a Cherry base.
The following pictures show how I do a bowl.
Step 1. I cut the pieces for the bowl.
Step 2. This is my first glue-up of pieces.
Step 3. Brings them together more.
Step 4. Brings the circles full circle and they are now ready to be put together and turned.
Step 5. They are all glued together and ready to turn.
The finished bowl is a piece I call Stair Step. I love turning wood because it is such a beautiful medium.

This is a nice looking segmented bowl. I purchased Malcolm Tibbetts “The Art of Segmented Wood Turning” and was captivated by the artistry involved. I also had the opportunity to hear Malcolm at a woodturner’s meeting and have been inspired to also attempt segmented turning.
As you have learned, the concept is straight forward, but the execution can be difficult. Again, nice work on this bowl.
